De Novo Synthesis
Tryptophan → quinolinic acid → NAD+.
Synthesizes NAD+ from the essential amino acid tryptophan via the kynurenine pathway. In humans this contributes a minor but non-trivial fraction of baseline NAD+. Disrupted in inflammation (IDO1 upregulation) and neurodegeneration.
